Peer Support Group for Russian-Speaking Adults

A safe, supportive space for Russian-speaking adults seeking understanding, connection, and hope.

Peer support groups are powerful and effective because they bring together people with lived experience. Through shared understanding, members find validation, empathy, and inspiration. Peer support reduces stigma, builds confidence, and helps individuals regain a sense of control over their lives.

This is non-clinical support focused on connection, resilience, and empowerment. We believe recovery is a personal journey—and no one should walk it alone.

Peer support:

  • Provides emotional validation and empathy
  • Reduces isolation and feelings of being alone
  • Builds hope through shared experiences
  • Encourages personal growth and self-determination
  • Helps develop practical coping skills
  • Strengthens resilience and confidence

Peer support empowers individuals to set their own goals, develop strategies that work for them, and move forward at their own pace.

Our Approach

Mental health challenges, emotional stress, and depression are often closely connected to substance use and addiction. In our peer support groups, we acknowledge this connection and give it thoughtful attention.

One of our core approaches is to support individuals during their recovery journey by offering encouragement, shared experiences, recovery-oriented resources, and educational materials. We focus on empowerment, understanding, and practical strategies that support long-term well-being.

We also emphasize the importance of physical activity and movement as powerful tools for building self-esteem, confidence, and emotional balance. As part of our recovery-focused support, we offer boxing-based exercises, which help improve concentration, reduce stress, and promote emotional and social engagement.

When combined with mental health and substance use support programs, structured physical activity and healthy coping strategies can strengthen resilience, reduce cravings, and support sustainable recovery.

Why a Peer Support Group?

Peer support groups strengthen communities by reducing isolation and building meaningful social connections – especially within culturally and linguistically diverse populations.

For Russian-speaking adults, peer support helps navigate:

  • Language and cultural barriers
  • Accessing community resources
  • Mental health challenges and stigma
  • Life transitions and stress

Culturally sensitive peer support builds on strengths, encourages mutual support, and creates opportunities for leadership. Through shared experiences, members help each other face daily challenges and build a stronger sense of belonging and well-being.

About Us

Our story began with a deep understanding that mental health is just as important as physical health. Through our own immigration journey, we experienced firsthand how deeply mental health challenges can affect overall well-being. These experiences inspired us to take action and create meaningful support for others facing similar challenges.

From this vision, UMIT Counseling LLC was founded, and peer support groups became the first service we proudly offered to our community. Our core values are centered on supporting individuals, building confidence, fostering self-determination, and reducing stigma and bias around mental health.

Our facilitator Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor Intern (CI), certified Mental Health Peer Specialist, Certified Community Health Worker with experience supporting individuals facing mental health and substance use challenges. Most importantly, we are committed to serving the Russian-speaking community with cultural understanding, respect, and compassion.

We believe everyone deserves to be heard, understood, and accepted for who they are – without being judged or “fixed.” Our goal is to inspire hope and open the door to new possibilities.

Our mission is to build a supportive community rooted in empathy, compassion, and self-compassion, while serving through a social justice lens. We focus on connection, growth, learning, and engagement. By building on the strengths already present in our community, we promote mutual support, self-determination, dignity, respect, and equity.
